Project Appleseed

NOTE: I've handed off batch one to Mike Azariah and the excellent idea of Operation Magic School Bus. Look, he's on TV

The Mission

Once per month drop 10 cans containing enough BPCs for a new player to self build some very, very basic PVP ships that they'll be able to fly in the first few days. The can will include a couple of Venture fits to assist the mining in case of loss. The ships should cover various styles of fitting and fighting.

Reason

Crius has seen to it that there is no wait on a build slot so the pilot can mine and then build and then fly with just the build time. The build times are lower too. The aim is to simultaneously get the player interested in industry (if they weren't already) and get the player out fighting. The best result will be an industrial player fucking around on the undock in duels and random content while the station cooks up the next ship

Advice

See the Fits section at the bottom of this page

Download EFT, the EVE Fitting Tool, from the link on the EVE Online Forum page : https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=24359

Select and copy one of the fits - eg from [Venture, Newbro Venture] to Small Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I, so that it's on your computers clipboard. Start EFT and it should auto import the fit from the clipboard

You should now be able to play around with the fitting and experiment. You should look into "API keys" so that EFT knows your skills. EFT should guide you but there is plenty out there. Google. You'll be doing a lot of that in your EVE career anyway.

Update the fits with better modules that drop from belt rats.

Build the PVP ships.

Get them blown up.

The aim is to fight and to create some stories. Forget about winning for the moment though do consider teaming up with other people, new or old.

Check out the EVE University wiki of the ships involved for ideas. There is a lot of info in this wiki. Contact EVE University in game for more information.

Questions and Discussion

But Space Noob, aren't these shit fits!?
They are intended to be flyable within the first day or two (maybe a little longer with the Tristan), especially if someone has accidentally poured their skill queue full of industry skills, and to be generic and moddable (eg removing armor and reps for speed and agility) if research into modules is done.

But Space Noob, no one will win a fight in these will they?
That isn't the intention. The intention is to be able to have fights while having almost zero ISK, not to win fights. Then again, an enterprising new player might build the ships and hand half of them to a friend and duel each other or gang up on someone else.

But Space Noob, why not researched BPOs?
I'm not rich!

You are
I'm comfortable. But the real intention is to get new players both building (it's a Crius themed mission!) and fighting while ameliorating the worst of the impact to a beginners wallet. It should also encourage investment in BPOs.

Mined minerals aren't free though
When all you have is time and a few runs in a Venture can build a PVP ship then what have you lost?

Bah. Mining is boring
Encouraging mining isn't the aim. New players start poor, this way they are in game doing something to further their game. Besides I still mine in my Venture from time to time for nostalgia. Ten minutes won't kill anyone.

These fits couldn't even rat in some places
The trial area is Gallente space. I may try other racial fits but if you're that bothered you could always cover those for me

10 cans a month isn't a lot is it?
Nope but then my indy characters have other tasks to complete. I may expand a little, or you could do the same thing

Can I send you some BPCs to help?
Nah - can em up and drop em in Newbro space. I got other projects on the go and can't be lurking around starter systems all the time like a 1970s TV entertainer at a school gate.

This is the worst project ever
I know! right? Kept me entertained planning it though. Half of the attraction of EVE for me is random non flying projects I came up with. I needed a new one. I look forward to your even cooler plan.

  1. I like it...a couple thoughts...

you need a snappy phrase to let people know that blue cans are safe (I'm going to guess when you drop these cans you set them blue?). Something like "blue is cool".

Also, what exactly do you put in the can?

Do you put an actual packaged Venture + actual mods, and then bpcs for the PVP ships and bpcs for the PVP mods? Or is BPCs for _everything_ (venture BPC, mining mods BPC, pvp ship & mods BPCs)? Is it BPCs for a Tristan OR a Atron OR a Incursus, or is it the BPCs for _all_ those fits?

Also, in the post it implies multiple ventures ("a couple of Venture fits"). How many is a couple? Two?

This is a fantastic idea, clarification on specifics would be great!
